Today's Funeral Professionals should be, and could be, viewed the same as Firefighters and Police... heroes.
The transformation of police and firefighters from feared, unapproachable figures into professional, heroic public servants occurred in the 20th century, changing the public image of emergency workers. They rebranded themselves as scientific experts and neutral protectors of public safety, paving the way for the modern "hero" archetype we recognize today. So why hasn't the funeral industry gone through a similar transformation? The time has come to change this! Funeral professionals have to shift from isolated, reactive deathcare responders—something nobody wants to think about—into trusted local heroes and partners in public safety. You can accomplish the same modification, and the outcomes will be extraordinary.

Transitioning from isolated, reactive funeral homes to a proactive, community-focused approach:

When local firefighters visit schools, they educate children on essential fire prevention and home escape planning. When police departments visit schools, they provide important safety programs covering topics such as 911 usage and anti-bullying. During open house events at fire stations, the public is invited into the station's environment. When police officers participate in Toys for Tots collections, it demonstrates their leadership within the community. NOW, it is the funeral industry's (your) opportunity to engage in similar initiatives.

1. Funeral Home Openness and "The Safe Haven" Concept
  • Become the open, welcoming community landmark. Engage your community by hosting regular blood pressure checks at your funeral home parking lot or facility, giving seniors a reason to visit and feel welcomed. Collaborate with the Red Cross by incorporating your parking lot into their annual mobile blood drive to strengthen community ties. Organize events, such as a parking lot "trunk or treat," with local churches and organizations to foster community connection. Additionally, hosting annual events such as the "Widows Angel Tree" or the "Nursing Home Angel Tree" supports families, fosters mutual support, and provides additional community resources.

2. Shift to Proactive Prevention and Education
  •  Senior Outreach: Initiate continuous senior support campaigns to reinforce safety guidelines among the elderly population. (Next week, I will provide a detailed, step-by-step guide to accomplishing this with minimal effort, broad reach, and significant benefits. Furthermore, I firmly believe that you will provide an essential purpose for every nursing home, senior center, assisted living facility, and senior living facility in your community).

3. Local Charity and Civic Presence
  • Leverage your trusted status by joining efforts to support local charities. Establish annual support for an organization or create your own event, such as: "Fill the Bus" (collecting school supplies), "Pack the Truck' (collecting food for the food bank), or attending events and setting up a tent to raise funds for MADD, through activities like a duck pond game or other similar initiatives.

4. Social Media Engagement
  • I really want to emphasize how important it is for funeral professionals to use platforms like Instagram and Facebook. These tools are wonderful for sharing your community support, updates on how others can get involved in your outreach efforts, and educational information. Essentially, they help you connect on a more personal level, highlighting the caring person behind the funeral profession.

The next time anyone asks you, "What do you do"?  You proudly say, "I serve as a vital community anchor." (It's time you receive the recognition you truly deserve!
